Applying for Multiple Jobs at the Same Company:

Applying for Multiple Jobs at the Same Company

Applying for multiple jobs at the same company may seem like a smart approach. And maybe in certain circumstances, applying for a different job in the same company does make sense.

However, you have to be very careful in how you go about it.  One of my favorite colleagues narrated one of our exceptionally popular blog posts on this topic. Stay tuned as she describes how submitting multiple applications to the same company may negatively impact your candidacy. Here are a few bonus thoughts on the topic:

Risks of Applying for Multiple Jobs

  • Appearing Unfocused: If the positions are vastly different or unrelated to your qualifications, you may come across as indecisive or lacking a clear career path.

  • Negative Perception: Hiring managers might interpret multiple applications as desperation rather than genuine interest, which could harm your candidacy.

  • Diluted Application Quality: Tailoring resumes and cover letters for multiple roles takes effort. Generic applications can make you seem lazy or uncommitted.

  • Confusion Among Recruiters: Applying to too many positions might lead to questions about your true intentions and career goals, potentially causing hesitation in moving forward with your application.

Best Practices When Applying to Multiple Jobs

  • Be Selective: Focus on positions that closely align with your skills, experience, and career goals. Avoid applying broadly to unrelated roles.

  • Tailor Each Application: Customize resumes and cover letters for each role to highlight relevant qualifications and demonstrate genuine interest in that specific position.

  • Limit Applications: Stick to no more than two or three roles within the same company at a time to avoid overwhelming the hiring team or appearing unfocused.

  • Communicate Strategically: If you’re progressing in one interview process while considering another role at the same company, be upfront with recruiters about your interests and motivations.

  • Never Underestimate a Cover Letter: A well-written cover letter will go a long way towards explaining your goals and intentions.
