How to Tailor Your Resume

“Is it okay to rewrite my bullets for every job, or does that feel dishonest?” That question came up during one of our free Office Hours sessions, and it deserved more than a quick answer. Most coaches, recruiters, and hiring managers agree that each application needs a tailored resume. What rarely gets explained is how to tailor your resume without stuffing it with keywords or stretching the truth.

So our recruiting team sat down for a roundtable to work through it from the hiring side.

The Pattern We See

The conversation opens with a pattern our recruiters see nearly every day. A CRA reaches out to one of our recruiters, frustrated after applying to several open positions with a resume tailored to each role. None of those applications have led to a phone call or an interview. But when our recruiter opens the resume to review it, usually the only thing the CRA changed for each application is the job title at the top of the page, or another small detail or two.

So today, our team explains why that approach rarely moves a resume forward in today’s market. We get practical, discussing what recruiters and hiring managers look for instead.

  • What tailoring actually means, and the one shift that changes how a resume reads
  • How applicant tracking systems really work, including a common myth about automatic rejection
  • The line no one should cross, and why it matters more than ever when about 60% of the applicants who come through our portal have falsified all or part of their credentials
  • Why every bullet becomes an interview question, and how to prepare for it before the call
  • How long tailoring should really take once the foundation is right

The answer to the original question is simpler than most people expect…and the episode shows exactly where honest tailoring ends and misrepresentation begins.

Whether you are pivoting, newly out of work, or months into a search, this conversation gives you a clear, repeatable way to tailor your resume for each role while keeping every line true.
